Brenda: The Strength I Needed

When I first thought that I might be pregnant I didn’t want to believe it. But I knew I had to find out. First I went to a store and bought a home pregnancy test. My boyfriend and I were scared. After I took the test we waited for the result, but nothing showed up. There was nothing, so we figured that meant negative. We were a little relieved, but there was still a feeling that something was not right. A few weeks later I felt a ball inside my stomach. We both knew that we needed to get help. I saw an ad for free pregnancy tests available at a Pregnancy Care Center. My boyfriend and I decided to go there. What did we have to lose?

When we arrived we were greeted warmly by the receptionist and seated to wait. We were really nervous. Finally a lady came out and greeted us and said that she would be our peer-counselor today. She was very nice and made us feel better. We went with her to one of the private rooms and sat down. She asked us our names and about ourselves, but she was never pushy. After we talked for a while she asked if we wanted to take the pregnancy test. We told her yes, and she got one for us. It took three minutes for the results to come. When the timer went off we were scared to go look at it, because deep down we both knew what the answer was going to be.

After we learned that the pregnancy test results were positive we were sad. The lady gave us her card and asked us to come back, to talk about it and the different options we had. When we left we went to the park. I cried for a while, but I felt that the Pregnancy Care Center would help me, so I decided to go back. After that we went to the PCC once a week. We talked about life goals, personal goals and all the different options there are for young women who get pregnant. At first I just wanted to get an abortion because I was scared and didn’t want to deal with it. But after going there and talking about it I knew that was not the right choice for me. They had advice and information for each option, they were not one sided. We decided to keep our baby. We told our families, they were sad, but supportive of our decision.

After we had our baby we went to the center for parenting classes. Here we learned about things babies like, what can be dangerous and all the other good stuff as well as meeting other women in the same situation. After all that I know that going to the Pregnancy Care Center was the best choice I ever made. Without their warmth, advice and knowledge I would never be where I am today.

I finished high school and am currently in my sophomore year at college going for my bachelor’s degree in criminology. I have a part time job and will be moving out within the year with my soon-to-be husband. I love my baby boy with all my heart. I can’t imagine me without him.
