Jan: A Second Chance

It was the fall of the year, I had just started back to high school when I found out I was pregnant.

I was not ready to be a parent, I was just was not prepared for a child. The only choice was to terminate the pregnancy, and with the support of the babyÕs father we went through with the procedure.

Had I made the right choice? That Christmas there was emptiness inside, one I could not understand. Two months later, the signs were the same and I came to the Pregnancy Resource Center of Sandy for a pregnancy test. I was once again pregnant, I did not want another abortion, but the babyÕs father was encouraging me to proceed to that end.

I returned to the Pregnancy Resource Center two weeks later for support and encouragement to carry my baby. The peer-counselor talked about my feelings, what choice I would make for this pregnancy and that I needed to talk with my parents. We discussed the importance of finding a support system regardless of the choice that would be made.

During the next couple of months, my counselor sent me several confidential notes of encouragement and explained how the PRC would be able to provide practical assistance during the pregnancy. Two months after the initial test, I decided to carry my baby and parent. It was difficult, but I informed my parents and found a support system I did not believe would be there.

The PRC provided me with maternity clothing, baby layette, a birth class and other supportive services. The babyÕs father and I appreciated the birth class and felt it helped us through delivery, to be able to make informed decisions during the birth of our baby.

My parents were hurt and sad that I had the first abortion. They are sorry that I would always have the abortion as a part of my past. My regret is that I did not talk with them and that I had terminated the pregnancy.

Today when I am asked about my baby, I say, ÒI am blessed to have this angel.Ó Both the babyÕs father and I are working towards educational goals. The babyÕs father will say with tears in his eyes that he is glad to have this baby and very happy we did not have the second abortion.
