Client Stories

Brushing aside a stray bit of hair from her
forehead, Wendy sat alone in the 1st Way office one afternoon.
She had been riding her bike, she said, when she noticed the
1st Way sign advertising Free pregnancy test. Free ultrasound.
So she decided that it was time to get some answers about
her many physical symptoms.
Years earlier, on her own at age 15, Wendy drifted
into a romantic relationship with a school friend. When she
had learned she was pregnant there seemed to be little help
or support for her to carry a baby. Her parents, she said,
had their own problems. So Wendy turned to abortion,
though looking back admits it was a terrible experience.
Now at age 23, Wendy was involved with another
man whos own family had been blighted by abortion. While
living with his family Wendy had heard many times how much
he resented the fact that he had no siblings. It was due,
he said, to his mothers multiple abortions. Even so,
Wendys boyfriend let her know that he was not ready
to be a father.
When the test came back positive, Wendy began
to finger a small hole in the sleeve of her sweater. She looked
up at the 1st Way volunteer and let out a sigh. Was she reliving
her past abortion experience?
The volunteer took Wendys hand and together
they moved from the lab table and sat down on the couch. Wendy
was told about the many opportunities and aids that were available
to pregnant women in Eugene. If she could not stay at her
boyfriends house there were other welcoming homes available,
the volunteer assured her.
Wendy not only learned that her medical and
prenatal bills would be covered, but that she had found a
new friendsomeone who would faithfully be with her throughout
the pregnancy and beyond.
A shy smile replaced the tense look on Wendys
face. Things could turn out for the better after all.
