Client Stories

When Sally received the news from Lucy (a volunteer at 1st Way) that she may be pregnant, she was startled and dismayed. Unmarried, with a low-paying job and without family support, Sally confided to Lucy how difficult it would be to continue her pregnancy.
Lucy let the young woman know how important she was and that she would help her in any way she could if she would carry her baby. To start off Lucy gave Sally the name of a doctor who could confirm the pregnancy and help her with prenatal care. She put her in touch with several agencies who help pregnant women with food and financial assistance should she need it. As she was leaving, Sally’s eyes filled with tears. Lucy hugged her and asked her to return soon with news.
One week later, just as a volunteer was closing the office for the evening, Sally appeared at the door. This time the young women was smiling, and wanted to let Lucy know what a good experience she had at the doctor’s office. How much better she felt, knowing she could depend on the services of this doctor for her and her baby! Sally wanted to thank Lucy. Lucy was excited and ushered her into a room off of the reception area to hear the details.
“This is what we’re all about,” recalls Lucy later. “Not only saving the babies, but saving the mothers from feeling desperate. She deserved our support.”
