Client Stories

Janey, a 15 year-old, was experiencing what her mother called a “problem pregnancy.” During the phone call, it was learned that Janey has serious health problems that further complicated the suspected pregnancy. At the urging of a volunteer on duty, Janey and her mom were able to meet at the office where Janey’s pregnancy was confirmed.
Understandably perplexed and frustrated by the news, Janey’s mom could offer little support one way or the other while the boyfriend, it was learned, pushed for an abortion. What was Janey’s response to this situation? “I want to keep the baby. It’s alive.”
By careful listening to the fears, obstacles, and hopes of all present, the volunteer was able to open new perspectives. Could things change for the better — could there be a way to save Janey’s health and the baby’s at the same time? The answer was yes! — with skilled medical care and the assurance that her friends at 1st Way would be there every step along the way. Good things happen; we never lose hope.
Janey is now under a specialist’s care and her pregnancy is progressing nicely. Even mom is looking forward to the great event with renewed courage. And Janey is blossoming while working on her GED at home.
